It's James, your point person for this campaign.

Very familiar schedule for today:

1. The Latest from Eddy Webb
2. Reward Status Round-up
3. What else is going on...

(Getting very close, but still in the ongoing progress, but not yet ready to deliver yet phase..)

EDDY'S UPDATE

I'm heading off to the UK for UK Games Expo, but before I leave I wanted to give you a quick update on the state of Dystopia Rising: Evolution

LAYOUT

We have the first "pre-proof" layout done! That means all the text is roughly where it needs to be, some of the art is placed, and now our tireless art director can go through and get things to where he likes them. It's a lot of blank spaces and misaligned text at the moment, but some of the spreads really look amazing!

It's not quite ready for me to proof, though, but hopefully I'll have a chance to do that soon!

DR:E AT UKGE

As I mentioned, I'll be at UK Games Expo this weekend (May 31st – June 2nd). Onyx Path will have a booth there, so swing on by to chat, or head to Leisure Games if you want to pick something up!

I'll also be running a game of DR:E at the show! So if you want to try out the latest version of the game, grab tickets now!

STRETCH GOAL PROJECTS

Two of the projects are jumping ahead like Rust Devil Rats looking for a handout! In fact, they're moving along so fast that it's possible the jumpstart and the Threat Guide (now called Helnau's Guide to Wasteland Beasties) will be ready pretty soon after the core rulebook! Here's a look at where the tabletop RPG projects are at:

EDDY'S UPDATE

Greeting, survivors. Pull up to the campfire and I'll give you the latest news on Dystopia Rising: Evolution

Layout is moving ahead, and it's looking amazing. I was so excited by how it looks that I took a screenshot of the layout sample I saw. It's a work in progress, so things might change between this and what we finally end up with, but check it out!

I should be getting a full proof soon! That's when I sit down with the laid-out book (as a PDF) and go through it all one last time to rub out typos, note mistakes, and otherwise get things ready for you lovely backers to see it. It's getting really close, I promise!

And the stretch goal projects are starting to roll along. I've even heard through the grapevine that the LARP rules are nearly laid out, too, so folks who backed to see those early should be seeing them as well! While our DR friends wrangle the LARP rules, though, here's a look at where the tabletop RPG projects are at:

EDDY'S UPDATE

Hey, what are you doing here? Is it time for an update already? Man, time really flies in the wasteland!

February flew by in a flash, but a lot of things clicked into place. I reviewed the edited manuscript, and as always Dixie Cochran did a fantastic and incredibly thorough job. That freed me up to make the adjustments I've been mulling over since Midwinter, particularly to the antagonists. In fact, I went ahead and tossed in a table to help Storyguides in finding the right numbers when making their own zed and raiders. No need for other people to suffer through the same problems I had! So now it's over to Mirthful Mike Chaney for layout, and I can't wait to see what he does with it.

Now that the manuscript is solid, I was able to move forward with our stretch goals. Looking at my schedule, I realized I wasn't going to be able to handle these books directly. Luckily one of the book's writers, Catie Griffin, agreed to take on the development duties for the jumpstart and the threat collection. And in the past two weeks, she's already pulled together and revised outlines for both books, and they've been approved both internally and by the Dystopia Rising folks. In fact, earlier this week she's already got her writing teams together (even roping me into some work!), so those are shooting forward into the start of first drafts. To top it all off, I just sent a list of possible writers to our fiction manager, Matt McElroy, so he can get rolling on the anthology.

In the middle of all that, we've had some initial discussions about how we're going to roll out our community content program for DR:E. I don't have much to talk about on that front, but it's definitely on our minds. We'll likely have more to talk about as the release of the final book draws near.

And, while it's not in my direct wheelhouse, I'm hearing rumblings that the 3.0 version of the LARP rules are on the horizon. So people who backed to get a sneak peek at those should be pretty happy in the near future!

February 2019 Update
about 5 years ago – Thu, Feb 28, 2019 at 05:46:40 PM

Hello Dystopians,

Another month-end update as we continue to move forward with our campaign. The quick 'n easy break down of today's update:

1. The Latest from Eddy Webb

2. Backerkit reminder info

3. Reward Status Round-up

4. What else is going on...

EDDY'S UPDATE

Hello, survivors! Eddy again, to give you an update on DR:E.

I now have the edited document in my hands! Once I review it and make some additional changes, I'll be slinging it over to Mirthful Mike Chaney for layout. We generally don't give firm dates for releases, but I think it's safe to say you'll be seeing the beta PDF before too long.

I've been using the last bit of time to poke at the system a bit more. As I mentioned last month, I got some great information from the game I ran at Midwinter. In addition, the version of the Storypath system I'm using is based largely on the one we're using in the Trinity Continuum books. Danielle Lauzon, the system lead for Trinity, also worked with me on DR:E, so as she tweaked the Trinity books during her errata phase, I was able to inherit some of her design wisdom and implement it into DR:E. It'll help me fine-tune the combat and salvage mechanics a bit more to really get the experience nailed down. That said, I stand by my assertion last month that the post-editing process will be pretty smooth -- we have a great foundation to build off of, and I'm at the stage where I spend a lot of time and energy debating what number to change.

Anyhow, right on time, the last of the art has rolled in, and I continue to be blown away by what our artists are providing. It's hard to pick just one piece to show off, but this picture of raiders really strikes the right balance of scary and cool-looking to me. Check it out!

All this means I'll start ramping up work on the stretch goal products -- the jumpstart and the threat collection -- in the next few weeks. I'm still debating if I'll be developing those or if I'll be asking one of our talented pool of freelance developers to pick them up, but I know the writers on the core rulebook are chomping at the bit to get back into the wastelands. And so am I!

And, just a reminder to confirm your rewards in your BackerKit survey, if you haven't done so already.

Just a quick aside - if you want to know which Creeds are the most popular, at least in terms of add on selection for the enamel pins ... the Kings' and Queens' Court is way out in front, with Church of Darwin coming in second! If you're a fan of Nuclear Family and were thinking about adding on a pin... maybe show them some love!

January 2019 Update
over 5 years ago – Wed, Jan 23, 2019 at 08:59:49 AM

Hello Dystopians!

The snow is falling, and rather than shovel the driveway for the third time today, let's share our first status update of 2019! Eddy Webb is back from the Midwinter Gaming Convention in Milwaukee with our first DR:E update of the New Year:

Hello, survivors! Eddy again, to give you some updates on DR:E.

As the editing pass is winding up, I took the manuscript out for a test drive at Midwinter Gaming Convention, with a table of both Dystopia Rising LARP fans and people who had never really heard of DR. And we all had a blast! I actually was feeling pretty exhausted that day, and after my nap I decided that I didn't like the adventure I had written up, so I was able to toss off a new one an hour before the game start.

That was, to be, a really good sign. First, that players who both love the setting and those who just want a good post-apocalypse adventure game are finding a lot of fun in DR:E. Second, that the setting and mechanics are strong enough that you can whip something up on short notice if needed. I did find a couple small things after the game that I want to tweak (mainly nudging the antagonist die pools up a more), and I need to incorporate the names of those backers who pledged to have a character in the manuscript, but I'm anticipating that the post-editing review process will be pretty smooth for all that.

Speaking of Kickstarter backers, I noticed Michael Pucci running a game for the player who backed at the PERSONAL HORROR level to have a special, canonical DR:E game run at Midwinter. What I saw involved a train and lots of excited yelling, so it seemed like everyone was having a blast! And in the end I got a lot of praise from everyone involved, saying that the Storypath system worked really well with the updated setting. Luckily I was working on an amazing foundation of a fantastic world and a robust system!

We're also getting the rest of the art in, and it's looking fantastic. I actually have so many great options, but I finally settled on a couple of pieces from the amazing Mark Kelly to whet your appetite.

The art should wrap up around the time text is ready for layout, so you should be seeing a beta (pre-release) PDF before too long. We'll give you an update when we're closer, but soon you'll have your first look at the game in all its undead glory!

And, just a reminder to confirm your rewards in your BackerKit survey, if you haven't done so already.

Speaking of which...

Final 24 hours for the They Came From Beneath The Sea! Kickstarter campaign!

They Came From Beneath The Sea! is a new tabletop RPG from Onyx Path, encompassing the wonder, horror, thrills, and hilarity of 1950s science fiction. This game evokes all that is great in the B-movies of decades ago, and provides a dynamic, fun experience at the table.

The players, as humans, live in a world under increasing attack. The attackers? Aliens from beneath the sea, obviously!

Adventures can range from the one-shot defense of small coastal town, to the lengthier liberation of a cruise ship invested with gill-kin, all the way to a campaign in which characters seize an alien submarine and ride it all the way down to the sea bed to take the fight to the invaders.

We've unlocked 13 Stretch Goals and revealed the entire manuscript - which uses the Storypath system! Come check out They Came From Beneath The Sea!
